The New African Photography Reclaiming Identity & Image from the Lens

There is discipline before art. Imagine having it all and becoming late Elvis. I rather not. And it seems, Emeka Okereke, the photographer focussed in this Al-Jazeera Artscape episode believes that as well. In this video, he and a group of African photography enthusiasts trek across Africa searching for their photographic voice as well as enduring the many harsh realities of overland African travel, all in the name of finding new ways to photograph their culture and continent.

Their group’s discipline highlights how powerfully artistic integrity can sustain, and also–at least to me–demonstrates the unique beauty of fighting simplistic representation. As Okereke explains in the video, “A photograph is a window and not the view. Don’t photograph what you see, photograph what you feel.”

Good words, indeed.
